The Rake and Pikel, Huntington

Located not far from Chester, we drove past this country pub and recognising the name from another food blog I immediately decided we needed to make a reservation for in a few weeks time. Having undergone a refurbishment and boasting a large outdoor area as well as being dog friendly, I was really looking forward to it. Little did I realise I’d booked for the evening that England was playing in the Euros, and when we arrived we were lucky to get a parking space.

Happily, the staff were lovely and sat us outside away from the football fans but also away from the kids in the play area. We had our own little spot and other than a few people smoking near us, which is always appreciated when you’re eating, the atmosphere was very relaxed and everyone was happy to pet the dogs, who I must say, were on their best behaviour!

Now I’d already been told what I had to try from the menu, owing to the fact the foodie I mentioned earlier actually works at this pub. So I stuck to my guns and ordered the limited edition ‘Luther Burger’. This beauty consisted of 2 burgers topped with Swiss cheese, bacon and maple syrup, served between two glazed doughnuts. Yes it’s a doughnut burger, and oh em gee it was glorious. Sweet, unctuous and so so moreish. I devoured it without uttering a word.

My husband actually ordered a starter, slow roasted duck bon bons with a spiced plum sauce. Obviously I had a try and these were unexpectedly amazing. Really flavourful. Then for his main he chose a burger from the special football menu, and as suggested by a staff member he picked the Spanish burger. Two steak burgers, in a sourdough bun, with chorizo and a manchego cheese sauce. Served with skin on chips.

Now by this time I was already full, but couldn’t not order the dessert I’d been recommended. Biscoff Nachos. Nachos topped with Biscoff spread, chocolate and caramel sauce, Biscoff biscuits and Biscoff ice cream. Allllll things Biscoff basically, and I love the stuff. Just look at my face !

All in all, minus the lack of parking, this place is lovely. The staff were incredibly friendly, the food was delicious and there’s dog ice cream! What’s not to love! Definitely recommended. Just maybe not on a football night 😂 Find their website here

More Biscoff the better for me!
