It’s been a long time since we’ve eaten at a Mowgli and when I heard they were due to open a restaurant local to us at Cheshire Oaks I was very excited. Mowgli was founded by Nisha Katona in 2014, and the idea was that she wanted to be able to serve the kind of food Indians eat in their homes. Nisha started with Mowgli Liverpool and Manchester and has grown from there. She writes cookbooks and you may have even seen her on This Morning cooking up a storm. If you want great home style Indian flavours, and not your stereotypical curry, you have to go try. Read on to see what we ate….

I had reserved a table with a small deposit luckily, as when we arrived at the restaurant the queue was out of the door. The interior is bright and airy with a big glass roof and lots of greenery. Some seats for two people are set up as swings which are lovely, but I’m glad we were sat at a regular table as I think I’d be too enthusiastic on a swing 🤣 Anyway, we were quickly given menus, and because I’d asked my lovely Instagram lot their recommendations, I already knew what I wanted to try. We chose two ‘Street Chat’, one ‘Street Meat’ to share to begin with.

The food arrives as it’s ready and first to come was our Monkey Wrap. This open roti had massive pieces of tandoori chicken, pomegranate, spinach, mint and loads of fabulous chutneys on it and we ate it incredibly quickly. Which turned out to be great as everything else then turned up! People rave about Mowgli Yoghurt Chat Bombs, and though I’ve had them before I’d forgotten how fabulous they were. Crispy puff breads full of chickpeas, spiced yoghurt, tamarind and coriander that explode when you bite them. You eat them in one mouthful so just imagine a poppadom filled with all the toppings that you can eat in one. Joyous.

A few people had also recommended the Treacle Tamarind Fries so we grabbed a portion of these too. No regrets either as these spiced treacle, tamarind coated chipped potatoes were unbelievable. The portions of all of the above were also enormous! There were still fries left to enjoy with the following courses.

As we both have appetites on the larger size, we both then ordered from ‘The House Kitchen’ portion of the menu too. These are more like your regular curry dishes, but there’s nothing regular about them. I chose the ‘Mother Butter Chicken’. Tandoori chicken in a sweet, spiced tomato and yoghurt sauce. The husband chose ‘Aunty Geeta’s Prawn Curry’, prawns in a tomato, chilli, fennel, panch phoron spice blend and mustard sauce. We then shared a side of rice and some delicious roti breads.

All, and I mean all of the food was outstanding. Not too spicy and packed with flavour. I’d eat here again in a heartbeat. If you like Indian flavours and lovely surroundings, you need to try Mowgli 🥰
