The Rock Inn, Haytor , Dartmoor

The Rock Inn was built in the early 1800’s and has been privately owned since the beginning. Now a 2 AA Rosette restaurant, this family owned Inn, right by the famous Haytor rocks on Dartmoor has an excellent reputation for its food and its accommodation. So after spending the morning climbing the rocks, a quick trip back to our cottage for a nap and then a dog walk, we came back to the Inn for the last meal of our holiday trip to Devon.

We were seated at one end of the building, I think in the dog friendly area, but the decoration was really interesting to look at whilst we chose our food. We even received a little cup of warm pea soup to start, along with warm bread and butter. The staff were really lovely and all Stevens dietary requirements were catered for with no complaint.

For starters I chose the caramelised onion soup, and Steve went for the smoked duck breast with plum. The soup was delicious and comforting and I wiped the bowl clean. Steve’s duck arrived cold which he didn’t expect but he enjoyed it nonetheless.

After a week of eating out most days I was already absolutely stuffed by this time, and so for my main meal I chose the cheeseboard from the dessert menu. This came with beautifully shaped crackers of various types, chutney, pickled celery and three types of cheese. A vintage Twanger (teehee), a Bath soft and a piece of Dorstone. I adore cheese and these went down an absolute storm.

Steve went for the rump steak with chunky chips, wild mushrooms and leaves. Cooked medium rare they switched the usual peppercorn sauce for a red wine jus.

Nice food, friendly staff, dog friendly and very welcoming. A great spot steeped in history.
