BUN. , Heswall

We visited this teeny little restaurant just before Christmas on the recommendation of another local blogger. I saw they could do gluten free bread and jumped onto their reservations page immediately.

BUN or ‘Born up North’ specialises in hand crafted burgers using locally sourced and sustainable ingredients. I’d stalked their Instagram to look at the menu before we went and had heard they also had a specials board. About a twenty minute drive for us, we set off on this particularly cold evening in good spirits.

It was definitely smaller inside than we’d expected and we were sat uncomfortably close to some other diners. Especially considering the current pandemic. I have an unfortunate ability to display my feelings on my face and I think the chap in charge saw. We were moved to one end, him saying he needed the space for a large party which was arriving later. Which he did. And I thank you sir, I felt much better once settled in a corner away from everyone. How antisocial am I! Great service though.

Now onto the food. I immediately chose the Festive burger from the specials menu, with a side of truffle Parmesan fries, but Steve’s choice was a bit more complicated. He couldn’t have the regular burgers as they contained a small amount of gluten, nor the Seitan burger as it’s basically all gluten. So in the end he went for a vegan burger in a gluten free bun with a Beyond Meat patty. Neither of us had tried these before but I’d heard good things. He chose some Cajun fries too.

My festive burger consisted of : Turkey breast stuffed with cranberries and truffled roast chestnuts, wrapped in pancetta, with a sprout remoulade, pommes maxim, comté cheese and a festive sauce a la rossini. And WOW IT WAS INCREDIBLE! Possibly the tastiest burger I’ve ever had. And so so different. I ate it stupidly quickly and wish I’d savoured it more. But ah well.

Steve’s burger consisted of a Beyond Meat patty, plant based smoked applewood cheese, green pepper and jalapeño salsa, chilli jam, Korean BBQ sauce, crispy onion and pickled cucumber ribbons. After all the indecision ordering, he loved it and was really taken aback by how ‘meaty’ the burger was. Delicious!

We were talked into having a dessert but honestly I wanted another burger 🤣 I went for a Biscoff brownie not expecting much, but what I received was a slab of utter filth. So indulgent and rich, it was lovely. Steve could only have the sorbet so we won’t talk about that haha.

Honestly, if you live on or near the Wirral I’d definitely recommend this place. If you like burgers that are innovative as well as delicious then you’ll love it here. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the allergens and are good at talking you into dessert and extra chips too 😂 big thumbs up from us.
