Haighton Manor, Preston

Haighton Manor was the location for a lovely Sunday lunch with friends recently. An old hospital, this now refurbished building sits in lovely green surroundings and has a lovely old pub feel inside. As a Brunning and Price pub, the food is a little pricey and Steve had limited options but we enjoyed ourselves nevertheless.

After a few nibbles to start, it was time for our mains. I went for half a roast chicken, with stuffing, pig in blanket, roast potatoes, veg and gravy for £17.95.

Steve chose a roast from the gluten free menu. A topside of beef, gluten free Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, veg and gravy for £16.95. He was well aware that dairy products would have ran throughout this but as is often the way in these pubs, if you can’t have dairy or gluten, you don’t eat. In this instance he is lucky he is not allergic.

The chicken was delicious and came as a huge portion. The stuffing wasn’t fresh which was a shame but it tasted lovely. The beef seemed a bit sad when it came though, two flimsy slices placed with not much care. Of course it was all eaten though. We don’t have roast dinners very often so it was still a treat.

For dessert I went for a hot drink with a small sticky toffee pudding for £6.95. I do love a cup of tea which came in lovely crockery, however the cake was barely warm which was disappointing. And I say again, why does nowhere do custard anymore?? Maybe I’m just old but I like custard with a sponge pudding,

Anyway, the place itself is lovely, family friendly, and where we sat, dog friendly. The outdoor area is massive and there’s ample parking. As a Sunday treat seeing our friends it was a delight, the gluten free menu is fab, we just won’t be rushing back to a Brunning and Price anytime soon. At least not until after payday!
