The Angel Taste of Devon, Dartmouth

We spent a whole week in Devon and ate at many fabulous places that I shall blog about, but I couldn’t not start with this one. The Angel is a multi award winning, fine dining restaurant headed up by the amazing chef Elly Wentworth (you might have seen her on Great British Menu). We booked a table here after seeing her on the show earlier in the year and were excited to hear that we would be eating a six course taster menu, consisting of local ingredients in a beautifully located listed building.

I will begin by saying that the front of house staff were brilliant. The FOH manager Jordan was really knowledgeable and the waitress who I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t get the name of, was so friendly and helpful. Now onto the food…..

The kitchen was very adaptable and after warning them, they had come up with a special gluten and dairy free meal for my husband. It was just as special as what I was eating.

Nibbly bits to start us off with the Gf/Df menu
Fresh, warm sourdough with the creamiest local butter
Pork belly with plum Amuse Bouche

Now we had already eaten a few plates and weren’t at the first course yet. I adore tasting menus like this as you get a little of everything. To drink Steven was enjoying an alcohol free Riesling and I was on a full fat Sauvignon Blanc. We were the only guests for a good half an hour, I guess to give the chefs time between each menu and it was lovely and relaxed and great to be able to have a quick hello with Elly.

Roast hand dived scallops, smoked taramasalata, orange, Saffron and fennel
Milk cured liver, spiced plum chutney, Sauternes, cobnut
Crispy liver and plum side
Stone Bass, Quinoa and a shellfish bisque. Steve’s with the same but Dairy free

It was so lovely eating what we knew was fresh, local produce. The scallops were an incredible start and though I wasn’t sure what to expect from the liver, I really enjoyed it. I’m odd in that I adore pâté but you won’t catch me eating a big piece of offal but this was just delicious. The crispy side dish was gorgeous too. Instead of the liver Steve enjoyed Dulse cured salmon with celeriac and beetroot.

For our main we had chosen the Devonshire Lamb. With mine came a heritage tomato tart which was crisp and sweet, and paired beautifully with the perfectly cooked lamb. The olive caramel was out of this world and I’m not even sure what it was. Just such a powerful flavour! Steve had the same minus the pastry

Devonshire Lamb, heritage tomato tart, black olive caramel, lamb jus
Pre dessert of lemon sorbet. Mine on panna cotta, Steve’s on raspberries

Now I knew before we came here that I wanted to try the dessert that Elly got such a great score for on Great British Menu 2021. Made up of Banana, sesame and chocolate, the description doesn’t do it justice.

The Black Penny was a tribute to the first adhesive stamps, in a menu designed around the theme of innovation. I even got my own letter with it 🥰 With a white chocolate ‘stamp’ and the rich chocolate beneath, it was a beautiful way to end my meal.

My letter
The Black Penny

All I can say to everyone at the restaurant is Thankyou. Thankyou for creating a menu my husband could eat and Thankyou for creating such a beautiful menu in such a beautiful place. Credit to all of the staff. Just brilliant.
